I'm a past customer of Witopia and Freedur. Witopia was ok for reading news sites but always slow for video streaming (youtube, iPlayer, Hulu). I saw lots of Freedur ads on expat sites and I thought this VPN is good. Freedur was faster but with very often interruptions (almost daily). Also the software was easy to use but full of bugs. It was a memory hog on my computer (used more than Firefox). Also it seems this company has really bad security practice as they were hacked a few times and customers information was stolen (by "big brother" maybe?)

A friend of mine invited me to Astrill - I got a 7 days trial. Astrill is very easy to use, just like Freedur, but really much more polished than Freedur and with much more servers. Also Astrill is the fastest VPN I ever used in China. I was really happy during the trial and decided to go for 1-year (about ~$5/month). I really recommend it. If you are looking for a VPN just ask them for a free trial.

I've been using Strong VPN (strongvpn.com) and have had good results with it. There are many others out there, but this is the only one I've used so far. Maybe others can give you more options.

The best solution is actually free, while demands quite a bit of know-how in computers. It's a proxy script called GoAgent, that utilizes IPv6, and Google App Center to take traffic through the Firewall using Googles servers. You should try it out if you have some computer skills, it requires you using the Terminal alot. It's availible for Mac, PC and iOS as well, but requires a Jailbreak to work on iPhones.

Over the years, I tried many. I use now Astrill. It's great, the best VPN I ever used. They are adding new servers so often, now they support 22 countries: USA, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Russia, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia. You should try it - just ask them for a free trial account.

I've been using witopia. When it worked it was so slow. Three months ago my witopia expired and a friend recommended me astrill. This VPN really works well, it's very fast and they have very easy to use software which supports OpenVPN and their own VPN protocol (they call it OpenWeb). What I like with Astrill is ability to use it on my laptop and iPhone at the same time and also lots of servers to choose from. I just read above about strongvpn not allowing to change servers, in my opinion this is really bad. With Astrill you can change server with just a mouse click any time you wish. You get lots of USA servers, Canada, UK, Australia, etc. I think Astrill is setting a new standard on VPN market, all others vpns I tried used outdated PPTP protocol which works really bad in China.

Witopia was unreliable for me.

I used Freedur for not even a month and then that whole Skydur vs Freedur fiasco took place. Decided to not use either of them.

12VPN was pretty good but still did not work for me from time to time. Better than Witopia though.

Have been using Astrill.com for 6+ months and it's the best one I've used so far. Can choose from 11 different US servers and 7 Europe servers, test server speeds, choose sites that you want or don't want to filter, etc. Their interface is kinda like Freedur's with that giant on/off button.

I'm using Shanghai Telecom's ADSL 2M broadband.

I'm a big fan of 12vpn . After beeing a cwitopia customer for 2 years I tried some of the PPTP VPNS ( VPNinja , freedur  etc )  available but they all fall short to 12vpn.

Connections speed's are good for me, you can change your gateways as much as you like ( strongvpn makes you pay for it) and I can connect to my Iphone through L2TP which is better than PPTP for mobile phones.
They also offer a profile that only unblocks the most common websites ( FB , Twitter, Youtube) etc and leaves the rest of the traffic get routed through the normal ISP which makes browsing chinese websites faster.

You still need to try for yourself though, as VPN speed depends alot on your connection and setup

VPN creates a tunnel between your laptop and therefore the remote server. All data getting into the tunnel is encrypted and decrypted at the receiving purpose. Any knowledge that isn't encrypted won't be ready to enter the tunnel. Sturdy authentication needed by the personal network would keep unwanted on-line species like hackers and spammers at approach as they won???t be ready to crack the authentication required to enter the network. On obtaining a Secure VPN account, you may be allotted a server generated information science address of another country masking your original information science address. It might render your browsing anonymous. Your entire requests area unit routed to the remote server of your VPN supplier. And, the remote server would connect you to web.

Astrill is inexpensive, great setup and works on all your devices. The company is on the ball whenever the Chinese government tightens systems, and they won't just leave you in the dark, but will update you regularly.

For $5/month I bought one license, and now I have a home license (extra $5/month) which means that I can have 5 devices online at the same time - iphone and computer + my partners iphone and computer. I have it on my office computer (same license too!)It has become much more easy to install, and I think there may also be an app now for mobile setup.

Astrill saved me from the GFW <3

The outcomes for 12vpn are not enough that you can use your vpn for a long time. Take an express vpn review with comparison of different servers so that the selection will be made for the best vpn.

Free2Surf works good in Shanghai and most of Asia actually.

Their PPTP plan works fine for me, but many people say PPTP can be blocked and OpenVPN is ideal.

Anyway good service, 24x7 support and they respond quick.  Cheap too.

I know this is an old thread yet I feel compelled to share my experience.. I was quite amazed on the fact that one of the leading VPN provider of the industry named PureVPN [www.purevpn.com] is not mentioned here..HMA, StrongVPN and PureVPN all three are the key players in the VPN industry now. I like PureVPN due to their consistent speed, reliable services and efficient support staff. I love their feature of unlimited server switching..Thumbs up :)

Witopia's the most-widely-used VPN among expats in China, but therefore it's also the most-often-blocked. The free Hotspot Shield is popular among Chinese, but also therefore sometimes blocked. Although Tor's now blocked in China, you can get a (free) bridge for it, but Tor's architecture means that it'll be slower (although it'll provide a heightened level of anonymity, if that's important to you). UltraSurf, Freegate, and Puff are VPN-like solutions used by many Chinese. Among the for-fee VPNs, "your mileage may vary" because of different routing depending on location (even, on opposite sides of the Huangpu), but Astrill has one little-known advantage: It can split-tunnel, e.g. If you set it to "unblock sites only," you can leave it on all the time and it'll proxy only blocked content, while allowing unblocked content to simply use the internet normally (thus not slowing down unblocked content).

I used expressvpn.com -- 12.95/month, rock solid and you can select between 11 different geographic servers (US and Europe servers.) Very fast and none of the nonsense required with the so-called "free" services. Very seamless and I can use it on my iPhone without even thinking about it.

I use and strongly suggest VPN services with Nullshells:  Www.nullshells.net

I currently pay $10USD a month through US paypal and have had no interruptions using the service.  Actually, the server is sometimes faster than the stock internet connection i get in Shanghai.

You can contact them:  Sales@nullshells.net

I used Witopia and had only bad experience with them. I saw here a lot of negative comments about them too, so my problem is not the only. However, witopia support tried to convince me it's problem with my ISP. My connection is just fine, with Witopia it worked worse than GFW, If you are using Witopia it's like you have double effect of GFW. Painfully slow, often disconnects, inability to connect to servers, etc... Also it appears they are now blocked in China.

I'm using now VyprVPN. I can say it's better than Witopia, but I'm not fully satisfied. Next month I'm going to try Astrill as a friend recommended it and also I saw a lot of positive comments about them.

I'll put in my two-thumbs-up for 12vpn.  Have been a user since Feb. And find it great.  Have used it via Windows, Mac, Linux, itouch, Nokia, and Android devices.    Tech support responce is good.  Have had one or two hiccups (on my side), but quickly rectified.  I'll be renewing.

I use Freedur but I really wouldn't recommend it although most shanghaibased websites does (shanghaiist and enovate among others). Now and then they go down (probably 2times in 6 months but still too much for me). They were also hacked about a few months ago and had all their customers credit card details stolen. Hassle for me and another minus for them. Otherwise their service is super easy to use though.

The only way to hide
your internet activity is to use encrypted connections or tunneling together
with mask IP features to download anonymously from other users and your ISP,
with the use of secure servers around the world that do not store your data -
this is how http://pirateray.com/proxy  works as an example. Works with any environment, browser, SKype, wifi, etc. Easy to install and free to try.
