I used witopia and it really sucked. Then I saw a lot of recommendations for Freedur on expat sites and tried that. That was even worse than Witopia. Their servers go down on daily basis and software is memory hog and just slows down my computer. A friend showed me Astrill and that's what I'm using now. It's really good and fast and even cheaper than the first two. Highly recommend this for China. Just my 2 cents

Yes you do need a VPN.  You should use one that is based in Asia because it is faster.  OrientalVPN.com is the one I use and they're simple and great!

I use Witopia, www.witopia.net throughout china when i am there as well as many other countries. Contrary to what was said above it is extremely fast for me on my macbook pro and windows 7 laptops. It actually sped my browsing up versus my chinese isp. :)  Never noticed any blocked websites. They have a 30 day moneyback if not satisfied policy as well.

I currently use Witopia.  It's slow as hell.  It sometimes connects, sometimes it doesn't.  I'm pretty much sticking with it because I bought a year of service, but I'm not sure if it's the Chinese internet or what, but it is NOT fast, and in fact, except for the fact that it SLOWLY allows me to connect to blocked sites, I think their service sucks.  They give you tons of options to connect, but it doesn't always connect, and when it does, it's like being on the China internet but slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooower.  It makes websites that normally load ok in China load about 10x slower.  Honestly, it's kind of a waste of money.  I have also used Skydur, which was fast as hell and let me see everything, but proxy servers get shut down here every other day.  So if you get that, it might be good for a few months then go down.  And then come back.

Witopia honestly sucks.  Slow, slow, and actually, slow.  Yes I can see facebook, but when I need to wait 7 minutes for the page to load, it loses it's value to me.  When I need to log onto a service to see one webpage and the normal ones I can see from China can't load properly, it kind of makes this service irrelevant.

Just my two cents.  I'm going t be looking into a new service.
